When I was a little kid, I wanted to know where we were from. Turns out, my 5th great-grandfather came over here apparently penniless because when he left Amsterdam the boat stopped in England and there the people had a tendency to make them spend a lot of money.
They spent all their money and didn’t have enough money for their voyage here. So the rich guys, would pay for their passage as indentured people and you had to work 7 years. After those 7 years he got a land grant in what is now West Virginia.

I’m generally from Europe. I’ve traced them back to royalty in Europe, but most people can do that. It’s not unusual. Actually, it’s unusual not to. – Tom
